This might become a New Year’s resolution - it’s humbling, and definitely slimming after the abundance of Christmas food.
In the last blog I said, about a talk for Christmas Day, that I had ditched a complex theological thought in favour of a simpler idea from my wife. We were going to involve the children in a short drama based on ’Jesus’ Christmas party’ by Nicholas Allan. Maybe God had other ideas. We couldn’t find the book in our rather cluttered house.
Back to plan A.
As each person entered church they were given a tie-on gift tag. After present showings, readings, prayers and carols I made three brief points. * We love to receive gifts * Jesus is God’s gift to us and we celebrate with joy * Write on the tag: ‘To God with love from Jesus’ and tie it to your neighbour’s wrist. Jesus gives US as gifts to God and God rejoices to receive us (with singing).
Is the last point justified? I think so. God (represented by Jesus as the father in the story of the prodigal son) runs towards us; hugs us; gives us gifts (robe, sandals, ring); and throws a big party (fatted calf, not turkey). If Jesus had told this story on his thirty-first birthday then it would be a Christmas story! I hope readers can carry this thought forward throughout the New Year and be blessed by it every day. Best wishes, Ian.
